Rising Demand for Flexible Leadership Solutions

The Australian market has witnessed significant shifts in executive employment patterns, with part-time workers increasing by 200,000 in 2024, bringing the proportion to 30.9% of the workforce. The healthcare industry particularly underpins this growth, with 22% of all part-time workers now in healthcare.

Key trends shaping our sector include:

  • Work-life integration priorities: Senior professionals increasingly seek meaningful roles that offer flexibility without compromising impact
  • Project-based leadership demand: Organisations require specialist expertise for digital transformation, compliance initiatives, and strategic changes
  • Skills-based hiring emphasis: Focus on competencies and cultural alignment over traditional qualification requirements
  • Locum and contract growth: Healthcare staffing experiencing 8.2% CAGR growth, reaching $493.02 million by 2033.

Key Challenges Facing NFP, Aged Care & Health Organisations

Critical Skills Shortages in Senior Roles

Australia faces a projected shortfall of 17,551 full-time registered nurses by 2035 in aged care alone, while NFP organisations struggle with skills shortages in technical and senior roles. These sectors compete for limited executive talent with corporate organisations offering higher remuneration packages.

Retention Challenges and Workforce Burnout

69% of healthcare hiring professionals report staff burnout as a key retention issue, up from 40% in previous surveys. The demanding nature of these sectors, combined with resource constraints, creates environments where even senior leaders experience significant stress. High turnover rates affect not only direct care staff but executive teams managing increasingly complex operational demands.

Regulatory Compliance and Quality Standards Pressure

Following the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, facilities must meet 24/7 registered nurse staffing requirements and mandatory care minute targets. Healthcare organisations navigate complex compliance frameworks while implementing digital transformation initiatives. NFP organisations face increasing accountability demands from funders and regulatory bodies, requiring sophisticated governance and reporting capabilities.

She knows her stuff

Gab is a great operator when it comes to recruitment and someone I would absolutely go back to as a trusted advisor in this space. She knows her stuff, is so easy to work with, supported me and the team to get the best outcome on a short turnaround, kept me updated at every step of the way, and is just a genuinely lovely person to work through tricky or technical recruitment matters with. Her people-centric approach, her dedication and her kindness put me at ease that I had the right person on the job.

I felt listened to

Gab spent time listening to the needs of our College and what was required from a candidate. Her work in vetting and finding the best applicant saved me hours of work. We had been looking for a HR Officer for months and upon seeking help from Gab, we had a candidate in days who we have now employed. Gab was terrific in this process and communicated well and kept me in the loop. Thank you.

Smooth and easy recruitment process

Gabrielle's work on behalf of Wildlife Victoria ensured a quick appointment and an overall smooth and easy recruitment process. The calibre of the candidates put forward was of the highest standard and showed her understanding of the role and the organisation. Would highly recommend Gabrielle to other non-profit organisations.

Aleisha Hall
Acting Head of External Relations, Wildlife Victoria

Gab was a pleasure to work with

We all know that December is not a great time to be looking for new staff. One call and I was convinced that Gab would do her best to help us find the right candidate for our 12 month PR role and she didn't disappoint. Whilst other Agencies closed for a few weeks, Gab worked through and presented us with very high calibre candidates making it a pleasure but difficult to short-list down to 4 for interviews. All impressed us, but in the end one candidate stood out and we were able to negotiate quickly for that important 'we need someone now' date to start. Gab was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend her to anyone.

FAQs

Common Frequently asked questions about Contact and Temporary Recruitment

What types of temporary and contract executive roles do you fill?

We specialise in senior leadership positions across NFP, aged care, and health sectors, including: Administration & Operations, Finance & Compliance, Human Resources, Marketing, Communications & Fundraising, and Program & Service Delivery.

How quickly can Patterson Recruitment provide contract professionals?

Through our pre-screened database and network, we are able to place contract professionals within 24 to 48 hours for urgent requirements.  For more complex or specialised assignments, we typically present suitable candidates within one week. This rapid response is made possible by maintaining strong, ongoing relationships with highly qualified executives who are open to flexible opportunities

What is the typical duration for temporary executive placements?

Contract lengths vary based on organisational needs, ranging from 2-3 weeks for immediate coverage to 12-18 months for major transformation projects. We offer flexibility to extend or modify arrangements as circumstances evolve, ensuring continuity of leadership during critical periods.

How do you ensure cultural fit for short-term placements?

Every candidate undergoes comprehensive briefings about your organisation's mission, values, and stakeholder environment. We prioritise executives with demonstrated experience in similar purpose-driven contexts and strong collaborative leadership styles. Our selection process includes specific assessment of cultural alignment and adaptability.

How does Patterson Recruitment manage invoicing and compliance for temporary and contract staff?

With Patterson Recruitment, temporary and contract assignments are simple and seamless. You’ll receive one weekly invoice that covers the candidate’s hourly rate, superannuation, payroll tax (if applicable), insurances, administration, and all statutory obligations. We also manage work cover and occupational health and safety checks, taking care of the entire process from start to finish. The candidate is paid weekly, and all rates quoted are plus GST.

What costs are included in the hourly rate?

The hourly rate covers the candidate’s pay along with all on-costs, including superannuation, insurances, payroll tax where applicable, and administration. This ensures there are no hidden extras – you receive one clear, consolidated invoice each week.

Who is responsible for paying the temporary or contract employee?

Patterson Recruitment manages the full payroll function. We ensure candidates are paid on time every week, handle superannuation contributions, and meet all statutory requirements so you don’t need to manage any of the back-end processes.

How does Patterson Recruitment support compliance and workplace safety?

We take care of all work cover, occupational health and safety checks, and relevant compliance requirements before placements begin. This ensures every assignment is safe, compliant, and fully supported, giving you peace of mind that all obligations are met.

Can temporary staff or contractors help with specific projects or initiatives?

Absolutely. Many of our placements involve executives leading digital transformation, accreditation processes, merger integrations, or strategic planning initiatives, recruitment drives, fundraising campaigns and other specific projects.  We match candidates based on relevant project experience and technical expertise, ensuring they can drive results from day one.

Do you provide ongoing support during placements?

Yes, we maintain regular contact with both clients and candidates throughout engagements. This includes performance check-ins, adjustment of scope if needed, and facilitation of communication to ensure successful outcomes. Our partnership approach means we're invested in the success of every placement.

Can a temporary or contract role become permanent?

Yes. A temporary or contract assignment can often transition into a permanent role if both the client and candidate feel it is the right fit. This option provides a practical way for organisations to assess skills, cultural alignment, and long-term potential before making a permanent hire. For candidates, it offers the chance to experience the role and workplace environment first-hand. At Patterson Recruitment, we view this as a professional and flexible solution that benefits both parties, ensuring the best long-term outcomes.

What happens if a temporary contractor isn't the right fit?

We offer a one-week notice period for both clients and candidates, providing flexibility to address any mismatch quickly.  In such cases, we immediately source alternative candidates from our database at no additional search fee, ensuring minimal disruption to your operations.
